I distinctly remember saying “I hope the 80’s never come back in fashion, that was a horrible time for style!” Oversized blazers, shoulder pads, big permed hair, aaaand …. high waisted jeans!
And yet, here I am in my brand new high waisted jeans and Guns N’ Roses t-shirt. And just like the band, even though I got my start in the 80’s, I’m really a 90’s chic. I wasn’t old enough to be an active participant in the fashion of the 80’s. But I can acknowledge the dreaded association women my age have when it comes to that period – “mom jeans!”
I’m not going to try and convince you that high waisted jeans are super flattering. I have my reservations. But I just want to keep an open mind about them. Could it be that if you weren’t old enough to experience the 80’s, you may not have such disdain for that trend that is making its way back around. To a teenager, the original 501 Levi’s are not “mom jeans” – they are a “vintage” find they scored at a thrift store.
I wouldn’t go digging for your mom’s jeans from 1987. But I encourage you to try a pair of new ones – with updated fabric, wash and fit – and see if you like them. They’re not for everybody. But who knows, you might find that high waisted jeans of the new millennium are a better fit for you than the ones from back in the day.
