Russ (my husband) said to me one day – you don’t do sweet very well. It wasn’t a criticism – more of an affirmation of what I already knew. It’s true – sugary sweet and innocent has never been my look.

This year we’re celebrating Valentine’s Day early. I’m attending New York Fashion Week the weekend before (yay, my first time!) and Russ is traveling for work on the actual day (booo!) For Valentine’s Day we usually get a sitter and go out for dinner. He brings me chocolates and flowers. Although one year I remember telling him I didn’t want chocolates because I was limiting my sweets. Then I was disappointed I didn’t get my chocolates. What can I say, I’m full of contradictions. Or I’m complex – not one thing or another. Or maybe I’m all of the things. Just like this outfit – both feminine and edgy, princess and a rocker chic – all in one.
I do not stand down to a man (or a woman), but I don’t seek confrontation.
I’m logical and analytical, but I have a soul.
I’m fierce and fearless, but I’m reasonable.
I have resting bitch face, but I’m kind.
I have a strong opinion, but I respect dissent.
I value facts, but I acknowledge faith.
I’ve never been the sweet gold-haired princess in need of saving by Prince Charming. I am my father’s daughter (and fill the shoes of a son he never had) – independent, strong, resilient – a queen! And that’s what my Valentine knew he was getting way back then and still now.
And a word about the outfit. Pleated midi skirts are totally in right now and I talked about my faux leather one here. I like this pink tulle one as a very feminine twist on the current trend. And, added bonus, it doesn’t break the bank. (See the bottom of the post for additional coupon codes for the skirt.) But now that you know me, you’re not surprised that I had to give this ballerina style a bit of a grown up edgy look with the black lace and leather moto jacket. I love the fit of this jacket and I wore it in different ways here and here.
