Listen up and take notice – this is a major Spring and Summer trend for 2017! It is the kimono floral maxi dress – a wrap style dress. The characteristics of this style are a plunging neck line created by the wrap, the tie waist and a gathered flutter sleeve. The kimono dresses are also usually done in a floral print although I have seen some that are polka dots or solid in color.
I featured a similar style dress from a few years back in a previous post. The kimono floral maxi dress I’m wearing here is a new purchase by the Privacy Please label. Kind of ironic, asking for privacy when the dress itself is so revealing. The deep v neckline goes all the way to the natural waist and there is no way to pull the dress for more coverage. It is designed this way and so are many of the other kimono style dresses I looked at. This design feature is what makes the dress interesting and unique.
However it presents some real life challenges. You can’t wear any sort of bra with this dress. Your choice of undergarments are limited to stick on bras (or pasties). And then you will still be sporting some serious cleavage. There is also the danger of the dress gaping open and revealing all your goodies, pasties and all! So how are you supposed to wear this deep neckline wrap dress?
1. Use fashion tape to stick the outer edges of the dress to your skin. Think of Jennifer Lopez wearing that green Versace dress at the Grammys or Beyonce and her orange dress from the Crazy in Love video. That’s what I had to do to pull this dress off – I taped the heck out of that v neck so no wind or movement can open up the wrap.
2. Wear a camisole underneath the dress. If you have a bigger than B cup size this might be your only option. I have to admit, it is not my preferred way to go and that’s why I didn’t model it. I think it takes away from the original design.
3. Wear the dress over a bikini swimsuit at the pool or beach as a cover up or resort wear.
