As I was starting (or trying) to get the hang of setting up this blog I was also thinking of the topic of my very first post. A monumental decision, no? I like to be organized and logical in everything I do so I feel it imperative to have an introduction or a natural start to this journey.
I recently did a photoshoot on Main Street in my town so I decided to have my first post be about where I drop the pin that says Home! (See how I cleverly inserted a contemporary reference, wink wink!
My home town of Bel Air has a name that may lead you to believe that I live in Los Angeles. I couldn’t be farther from there. (Well, not really, it could be worse – I could live in Bentonville, AR!) It is instead an obscure town in Maryland about 45 minutes north of Baltimore on the I-95 corridor. Back in the day it used to be primarily a farm town in a rural county. However, the expansion of the Baltimore suburbs and Bel Air’s very highly ranked public school system has attracted more and more young educated professionals who find it a great place to raise a family. Kinda like me and my husband.
But it’s also still very traditional and sheltered in many ways. I find it to be a place of constant tug and pull between the old and the new. When I moved here from NYC over 10 years ago I was horrified to see women proudly sporting clothes and hair that I had only seen in movies from or about the 80’s. Some still do!
Bel Air has some things to be proud of too. It is the home town of the family of John Wilkes Booth (I guess not too proud of this one) as well as more recently the location for numerous scenes from the Netflix show House of Cards. Maybe I should do a photo shoot tracing the footsteps of the show – that would be fun!
