Clothes have more than a utilitarian purpose for me. The types of clothes that excite me are the ones that incorporate elements or designs that are interesting and unexpected. Clothes that evoke a mood, refer to an archetype or transport you to a time period. High waisted or embroidered jeans from the 80’s, a denim jumpsuit from the 70’s, a Japanese inspired bag, pants with buttons like a sailor. Clothes are a way to express myself, to be playful and creative.
I have said before how much I love the classic silhouette of a timeless trench coat: the wide lapels, the double breasted buttons and of course, the belt. Seeing some of those elements in a dress is what makes me stop and take notice. This trench coat dress is done in military green. A color different from the classic khaki for a trench coat but a strong trend nonetheless. I had to add my favorite belt just because I’m so hopelessly in love with it!
I bought my dress weeks before the Met Gala this past Sunday. Seeing Priyanka Chopra in this Ralph Lauren trench coat dress took my breath away! It is absolutely stunning: classic and sexy at the same time, fierce and daring, feminine and powerful. A deconstructed and reimagined trench coat-turned-ballgown!
Priyanka was criticized and mocked probably as much as she was praised for her bold choice. There will always be critics but I firmly believe that no matter how over the top or plain an outfit is, it is the person wearing it that makes it. Confidence, charisma, poise and class are not sewn into the fabric or the buttons. They seep through the garment from the soul of the person who wears it.
