Big Girl Bedroom Update

This big girl bedroom update has been a long time coming. The concept was born four months ago – then it changed two times since. I have been working on aspects of the room than doing nothing because I was waiting on the furniture to arrive. And the weeks just rolled by. It’s still not quite as finished as I would like it to be but read on to find out what’s still missing!

Big Girl Bedroom Design Idea
Even though the specifics of this big girl bedroom design kept shifting, the general style of the room always remained the same. I knew I wanted something classic and neutral to fit the overall style of the house. We were definitely not going to have the rainbow colors and unicorns that Juliet initially requested – haha!
And before I get accused of being a mean mom who doesn’t let her little girl have creative freedom over her space, I want to explain something. I wanted to keep the permanent aspects of the design neutral because I predict that in a few years when Juliet is a teenager, she will want to move to our guest room which has an ensuite bathroom. So this room might become a teenage boy’s room or a guest room at that point.

The Bed And Nightstands
The bed was the item that took the longest to arrive – over a month! Juliet wanted a big bed that would fit two pillows on it. So not the twin she used to have. I didn’t want to overfill the room so a full size was sufficient. This is the Colette bed available on Pottery Barn Kids and Pottery Barn Teen. The feminine classic style and upholstered headboard are what sold me on the bed. I think this will be a great bed to grow into and use throughout her childhood and teenage years.
The nightstands are not new and we reused them. They were a very affordable buy from Wayfair and fit into the current design perfectly!
The Wallpaper
I knew that I wanted to keep with the light and bright feel of the white walls I’ve been incorporating into the whole house. However, I also wanted to bring in some visual interest. I debated between using wall molding or wallpaper. I know, didn’t we spend the last decade removing wallpaper from our 90’s builds? But wallpaper is back with full force. It’s widely available in peel-and-stick options but I fell in love with the subdued large-scale pattern of this Serena and Lily wallpaper. I got it on sale and only needed two rolls for the accent wall behind the bed.
I was a little nervous about putting up classic unpasted wallpaper up but after the first strip I got the hang of it and it was a very quick and pleasant project.
The Chandelier
After I gave up on my initial concept of a glam bedroom, the light I had bought no longer fit the new concept of a beachy/boho design. I fell in love with this oversized wood bead chandelier. It’s a lookalike for a much more expensive designer version but is super affordable for under $200 when on sale.

The Dressing Table/Desk
This grasscloth-covered desk is an IKEA hack that was another quick and easy DIY project. Read my post on how I covered a basic piece of furniture to achieve this high-end look! This time I used a peel-and-stick faux grasscloth wallpaper.

Decor Items And Bedding
Almost all of the decor items in the room are from Home Goods and the bedding set is from Pottery Barn Teen. (Sheet set and duvet cover set.) I wasn’t sure if I loved it in the room at first but it has grown on me. It’s a keeper for now until I find something I like better. The quilt is from The Hearth & Hand with Magnolia for Target collection. I love that it connects to the gray pattern on the wallpaper. The velvet pillow is also a Target find.

These woven baskets were also a Home Goods find but they’re also available here and are totally a worthwhile buy. They’re the perfect and most stylish way to store toys – which probably answers the question of where all of Juliet’s toys are!

Dresser And Swing
Juliet’s dresser is a vintage find from a local consignment store. She has had it since she was a baby and I love the antique look. I also invested in new period accurate hardware which at the time cost me more than the dresser itself – #irony! The artwork above the dresser is from IKEA. Both Juliet and I loved the feminine image and soft pink colors.

The swing is from Pier 1 Imports and at this point is only available for store pickup. I have linked a number of similar options below in case your local Pier 1 no longer has this one.

What’s Unfinished
You may have noticed that there are no window treatments on the windows. That’s because we are waiting on our custom plantation shutters to be installed. I have slowly been putting those in almost every room of the house. I love the streamlined and classic look of plantation shutters and will update this post when they’re installed.
The other unfinished aspect of this big girl bedroom makeover is the flooring. We have wall-to-wall carpet in this room and the boys’ room. The goal is to get hardwoods in those two bedrooms but it’s something that is on hold for now and it will be a part of a much bigger renovation in the future. I can’t wait to show you!
