Choosing the right luggage

The obvious travel essential is luggage. Unless you take frequent vacations or travel for work, you may only need a couple of pieces. If you are traveling for an extended period of time or are heading to a colder climate, you’ll need a larger size suitcase to accommodate more items or bulkier clothing. However, for shorter trips or warm-weather destinations, a smaller bag will do the trick. As you can see, size matters!

Pretty much all luggage these days is lightweight, has wheels, and extendable handles. Softside bags have a little flexibility for extra contents you pick up on your travels. Hardside bags have a sleeker, more modern look but both are extremely durable. These things are designed to be tossed around so you don’t have to worry about your belongings getting damaged.

For really short trips, a backpack is a go-to travel essential. No need to drag out the big bags for just a few items. You’ll find compartments for laptops and other necessities while keeping your hands free for other things, like that much-needed cup of coffee.

Do you travel with everything you own? Keep your travel essentials organized with a bag insert. Grab your favorite tote bag and drop one in! You won’t have to dig around for travel documents or your phone. You’ll need your phone to track your bags because you dropped an Apple Airtag in each one before you zipped them up. Look at you thinking ahead! When my checked bag didn’t make it to my destination on my last trip, being able to track it with the Airtag saved my sanity and removed the anxiety of not knowing where my bag was.

Packing toiletries

Hopping on a plane? Be sure to check for the most up-to-date TSA regulations for toiletries. Luckily, there are plenty of approved travel essentials when it comes to packing your health and beauty supplies. Now go put that Ziploc bag back in that bamboo organizer in your kitchen drawer!

Using refillable TSA-approved containers for items like shampoo and conditioner will prevent unwanted spills. You don’t want to open your suitcase after a long day to find something has spilled all over your clothes!

Keep your make-up brushes and blenders from making smudges with these silicone holders I recently discovered. They are perfect for on-the-go! Did you notice how they coordinate with the bottles?

I haven’t taken the leap with vision correction surgery so I still need to keep my glasses and contacts with me at all times. This case has a compartment for both! Why did it take so long for me to pick up one of these? It’s a lifesaver!

Don’t let vacation derail your healthy habits! Take your supply of vitamins and supplements along in this handy little pill organizer. It will fit anywhere and is a trendy upgrade to grandma’s pillbox. If you plan to have a little too much fun on vacation, toss in something to nurse a headache while you’re at it. You can thank me later!

A good toiletry bag will hold all your products in place and further prevent leaks with separate compartments. Keep a stash of items in your bag that don’t expire, like q-tips and cotton pads, so you never forget them.

All these items can easily be stored together in your bathroom or bedroom closet or even your linen closet.

Travel Essentials for packing clothes and shoes

While your luggage may have straps and pockets to secure your belongings, nothing beats using packing cubes! You can separate your clothes in so many different ways. For example, you can put daytime outfits in one bag and evening outfits in another. If you’re sharing a suitcase, these cubes are a great way to keep your stuff separate. Keep your poolside looks on top so you can get to that lounge chair, cocktail in hand, and feel that warm breeze you’ve been dreaming about!

Another benefit to packing cubes is the ability to keep your shoes separate from your clothing. This is just as important for your suitcase as it is for your closet at home.

Try to prevent creases and wrinkles by gently rolling your clothing before placing them into your packing cubes. But, just in case, take along a portable steamer to keep you looking like an experienced traveler. You may have just stepped off a plane, but you don’t want to look like you just stepped off a plane.

You’ve been having a great time on your vacation and now you need a place to stash dirty clothes. Most hotels don’t have the same hidden hamper cabinet that I do at home, so my solution is to bring along a separate dirty laundry bag. You’re on vacation from doing laundry too!

Keep cords tangle free

Don’t wad up charger cords and shove them in the pocket of your luggage. They’ll end up in a tangled mess and the whole point of a vacation is to de-stress! Keep everything nice and neat with this overlooked travel essential, a cord organizer. I don’t know about you, but I have devices that take the same chargers and others that require a different connection. Bundle everyone’s cords in a durable case to keep them safe from spills and other damage.

Don’t arrive at your destination looking like you got tossed around the cargo hold of the plane. Add some long-flight essentials to your carry-on bag and you’ll be fresh-faced and ready to go when you land! Watch your favorite Netflix show with this hands-free holder and settle in with your pillow, blanket, and noise-canceling headphones. Slip your eye mask down to block out the light when you are ready to drift off to sleep. Sounds relaxing, right?

Do you know what’s not relaxing? Traveling with little ones. Rule number one: plan ahead! Prevent tantrums and be prepared to entertain your kiddos for hours with a portable lap tray! Use it for serving them snacks or as a desk for doodling. It has a tablet holder, mesh pockets for little toys, and a drink holder. Just fold it up and store it in their backpack with all their snacks and toys. Good luck!
